A bit About Cape York
Cape York is a wondrous place of adventure for Motorcycles,
4WD vehicles and travelers in general.
It has its own unique plants and animals that exist in this
region alone.
It is steeped in history with the first maritime Dutch explorers,
its Aboriginal past, its white explorers (Edmund Kennedy), gold
mining and the settlers that opened up this remote tip of Australia.
It is still remote in places yet touristy enough for those who
are willing to navigate the many heavily corrugated dirt roads.
This region has it all - from the savannah grasslands and mountainous
Great Divide to the many crystal clear streams and rivers which
make for great fishing. |

Itinerary |
|
Day one/ 242km |
The first day of the tour we depart
Cairns and ride along the Captain Cook HWY with its magnificent
views over looking the Pacific Ocean. We stop at the beautiful
Mossman Gorge for a break and a refreshing swim. By mid day
we will be ready ride the Creb Track with all her creek crossing
and mountainous trails to arrive at the Lions Den pub for a
well deserved beer.
The afternoons will see us head to
Cook Town and along the way we pass by Black Mountain which
is made from thousands of Granite boulders and said to have
swallowed up many a traveller.
For those who have energy left over it will be a good chance
to explore the town. Dinner see us head to the pub for a counter
meal. |
|
Day two/ 269km
|
We ride out of tropical Cook Town
heading North West on Battle Camp Road(Normanby Range). This
has all the twists and turns you would expect from the Great
Dividing Range. You will notice the scenery change to the Cape
Savannah grasslands. You will get to explore old homesteads
of by gone early settlers along the track. The
afternoon sees us ride through Lake Lands National Park and
on to Musgrave Station to refuel the motorcycles and ourselves.
|
|
Day three/ 233km
|
Day three will see us ride out
of Musgrave Station heading for the east cost to detour a section
of the Cape York Peninsula development road.
This track will involve less frequented roads and tight sandy
tracks with a few creek crossings thrown in for good measure,
which will take a good part of the day to get through. The rest
of the day will see us pass through Coen heading for Archer
River with lunch thrown in some where along the track. |
| Day
four/ 241km |
Day
four we follow the road into Lockhart River and come across
the old Batavia goldfields and her hidden secrets before crossing
the Pascoe River. The Frenchman’s road will bring us
back to the development road and onto Moreton Telegraph Station.
We will refuel at Bramwell Junction before hitting the very
scenic Telegraph Track with her many sand stone creek crossing
and sandy trails of fun!! Along the way we will pop into Fruit
bad falls before finishing up the day at Elliot falls to relax
in her cool waters.
|
|
Day five/109km
|
We
leave our beautiful camp site and get back onto the Telegraph
Track for more twisting turns and unreal scenery. The day will
see us traverse more trails and cross the Jardine River on the
barge so the Crocs won’t get us. By
mid afternoon we will make camp in the coastal township of Seisia.
Here you will get a chance to catching your dinner off the local
wharf, that is if the sharks or crocs don’t get it first. |
|
Day six/102 km
|
We leave our sandy camp at a sensible
hour and ride the last leg to the top through a tropical rainforest
that twists and turns till the very end. The last 200 meters
is covered by foot, over the rocky escarpment to the most northern
tip of Australia. Its time to crack
the champagne with a big cheer “we’ve made it!!” some thing
to celebrate.
The day also sees us checking out Summerset,
an old abandoned outpost of the Jardine family once a representative
of the QLD government in the 1800’s.
We return to Seisia via Fly Point (a beach ride)
just in time for some good fishing and a coldie.
We finish of the night with a great restaurant meal. |
|
Day seven/ 0km
|
Out
of the saddle for a day you have the option of taking the shuttle
boat across the Endeavour Strait to Thursday Island for a half
day guided tour. The tour has a bit of history mixed in with
the sight seeing such as the Japanese pearl diving cemetery,
the Gun Battery and tunels over looking the strait and some
local souvenir shopping. Or for those
who just want to relax no problem just sit back at the camp
site underneath the shade of a cool palm tree and listen to
the ocean.
Thursday Island tour not
included in tour price. |
|
Day eight/ 109km
|
| On our return journey we will
once again make our way down the spectacular Telegraph track
and because Elliot Falls was so good we will camp over night
there again. |
|
Day nine/ 253km
|
From Elliot Falls we ride to Weipa
cutting across on Batavia Downs road. On our arrival you will
have the option of a Weipa mine tour or a chance to try your
luck with a spot of fishing before freshening up a dinner at
the Weipa bowling club.
Weipa mine tour not included in tour price. |
|
Day ten/ 365km
|
From Weipa we ride to Musgrave
station on the long straight corrugated roads.
This is our longest stage of the trip and is broken up into
3 stops for the day.
On our arrival we will relax for the night with a couple of
beers. This place is always great for meeting other dusty outback
travellers and swoping a couple of stories. |
Day
eleven/ 319km |
The ninth day we continue to ride
east back over the Great Diving Range to Cape Tribulation. This
is the only place in the world where the rainforest meets the
reef. We will stay at one of the most
grooviest resorts around-Pk’s.
The resort is situated right on Cape Tribulation
were we will have our farewell dinner in PK's along with a few
drinks of course. |
|
Day twelve/ 123km
|
| Our final day is a half days ride
and back onto the bitumen you know the stuff that is dark in
colour and there is no dust or mud spray behind you when you
ride on it. You’ll have a pleasant ride
back to Cairns and a time contemplate over the past magical
motorcycling days and time to start planning next years motorcycle

John the English man walking his way to the top.
He averaged 20km a day and his buggy was made out of an old
wheel chair and pool cleaner handles. He said he wished he
had made brakes for it because when going down hills the buggy
tended to steer off the road near big drop offs!!!
Check out the solar panel on the back for his radio. |
Fly Trap |
| |
This is the brilliant view you get when riding to Fly Point.
|
There
are a few aircraft wrecks in the area that are the remnants
from the
fighting in W.W.II. |
